The 48-year old quadriplegic from Singapore is the first wheelchair athlete to attempt this record and enter his name into the Guiness Book of World Records.

Dr Tan’s first event will be the Antarctic Marathon on February 26 and the final leg of his journey will be the legendary Boston Marathon on 18 April. The ING Thailand Temple Run will be the third stage and serves as the Asian stop.

Apart from his sporting achievements, Dr. Tan has been highly successful in his professional career. After receiving a science degree in Singapore, he went on to study a master’s degree on a Harvard Fulbright Scholarship. He then went to New Zealand for his PhD and later worked as a neuro-researcher in the U.S. Currently, he works as a resident in preventative medicine and public health in Singapore.

With his world record attempt he hopes to raise S$1.5 million for treatment of childhood cancer.
