The 159th annual boat race between the Oxbridge Universities will take place on 31st March

-- /EPR NETWORK/ -- At the end of this month, Britain's two most famous universities will once again compete in one of the country's oldest, most beloved sporting fixtures, the annual boat race. Some 250,000 spectators are expected to line the route, with 120 million more watching on television screens around the world.

Sponsored by investment firm BNY Mellon, this year's race takes place at 4.30pm on Sunday 31st March. Launching at Putney Bridge , between Fulham and Putney, the two crews will chart the same 4.25 mile course the race has always followed, through some of the loveliest stretches of the River Thames.

Organizers and fans alike are hoping there will be no repeat of last year's fiasco, during which a man disrupted the oarsmen of the Oxford crew by swimming across their path. The man was later jailed for public nuisance, and the race restarted, finally resulting in a win for Cambridge. The result pushed the Light Blues further into their overall lead of 81 wins, compared to Oxford's 76 wins.

A number of London's finest pubs and restaurants line this stretch of the river, and big screens will be erected for the gathered crowds who couldn't find a table. This year also sees the return of food stalls, family attractions and a beer tent next to the south stand of Fulham FC's Craven Cottage.

To mark the occasion, LondonTown.com have partnered with a number of hotels in London, all on or near to the river. Among the deals on offer is the Jurys Inn Chelsea Hotel London, which is around a 25 minute walk from the start of the race. When booking via LondonTown.com, travelling race fans can take advantage of a 71% discount on double rooms, a reduction that brings the cost of a night's stay down to £74.

The Holiday Inn Express Wandsworth is situated in Smuggler's Way. Less than 5 minutes walk from the riverbank, the hotel is offering accessible double rooms at a 50% discount, with rates starting from £66 pounds per night.
