June 19, 2013, 1:21 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Launching on Friday, the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival provides a great chance to enjoy some free alfresco entertainment over the weekend. The nine day event welcomes streets performances, outdoor art spectaculars and plenty of dancing in the streets. In fact, the whole of Greenwich comes alive for the occasion. This year's festival opens with As The World Tipped, an outdoor storytelling of the drastic effects of climate change. While further programme highlights include One Million, an imaginative combination of aerial acts and live music that tells the story of young people climbing to reach an elusive new job; Dancing City , the UK's largest annual programme of outdoor dance; and the Greenwich Fair, a packed weekend of outdoor theatre, circus, dance, installations and sideshow.
Another major event taking place this weekend is Taste of London, four days of al fresco gluttony with over forty of London's best restaurants and a flurry of Michelin star chefs descending upon Regent's Park. Visitors will be able to work their way through a range of miniature speciality dishes while enjoying live jazz and opera. Live performances can be found at the City of London Festival, a summer programme of music, visual arts, films, walks and talks; Sadler's Sampled, a two week festival that provides a taster of a huge variety of dance with short pieces; and West End Live, a free showcase of the best that London's West End has to offer.
The Wimbledon Village Fair returns this weekend, which is one of the largest free events in the south of London. With live music, dog and horse shows, a mini fun fair, zorbing, pony rides and a generous supply of food and drink stalls, the event is expected to attract around 20,000 people. It's also for a good cause with a high percentage of the profits being used to help people of the London Borough of Merton.
Summer fairs prove popular this weekend with the Lady Margaret School Summer Garden Party and Kew Fete also taking place on Saturday. The School Garden Party provides all the traditions and trimmings of a local English village fete, with stalls serving Pimm's, strawberries and cream, freshly made sandwiches, plants and books. As well as a bouncy castle and children's games, a BBQ, raffle, bottle tombola and a silent auction of gifts donated by local businesses, restaurants and bars. Plus, jewellery, crafts and fashion made by the girls of Lady Margaret School, one of London 's most prestigious and oversubscribed comprehensive schools. While the Kew Fete brings the whole area to life with more than 7,000 people expected to enjoy the vintage fairground, live music, dog show and more than 100 stalls selling everything from cards to chutney.
Not placing any risk on the weather is the Pimm's Summer Garden, which provides an indoor haven of singing birds and freshly cut grass. Ensuring it's Pimm's O'clock no matter where the sun is, the garden has a bar serving England's favourite seasonal tipple, a potting shed with summer goodies and its very own swingball championship. Picnic blankets complete with Pimm's and a hamper of tasty goodies are also available to book.
CoolTan Arts provide night-time entertainment on Saturday with their Largactyl Shuffle Midnight Walk. Giving Londoners a unique view of some of the city's building, the walk visits a number of buildings with an unusual design or purpose and looks into the mysterious psychological effects that they can have on people. Walkers will stop off at the Marshalsea, where Charles Dickens's father was imprisoned; Camberwell House, a former asylum; and Cross Bones Cemetery, a disused post-Medieval burial ground that was once an un-consecrated graveyard for sex workers.
