Calgary, Alberta, -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- For years, many people have avoided regular dental visits because they associate the dentist with pain and discomfort. Consequently, these people are neglecting their tooth and mouth health, leaving them susceptible to not only oral problems, but general health issues as well. Calgary Dentist Dr. Kim Orth offers sedation dentistry to alleviate these fears and ensure that even those with dental phobia receive proper dental care.

In sedation dentistry, the patient is anesthetized to the point of relaxation, but not unconsciousnessmaking the experience less stressful for both patient and dentist.

Dr. Orth offers two types of sedation. The first is oral conscious sedation, which comes in the form of a small pill taken approximately one hour before the procedure. The pill induces a "deeply relaxed but responsive state" in the patient. Often, the patient has little or no memory of the procedure.

The second sedation treatment is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is given at the dentist's office right before the procedure begins. The effects are immediate, allowing patients to feel relaxed, numb and sometimes giddy. The effects wear off naturally, without any lingering feelings.

The advantages of sedation dentistry are not only reaped by patients, but by dentists as well. Beyond treating anxious dental patients sedation can be used for the patients who have an overactive gag reflex, very sensitive teeth, difficulty sitting still for long periods of time or issues becoming fully numb through traditional methods.

Dr. Kim Orth offers sedation dentistry options at his practice Core Dental located in downtown Calgary, near Red Deer. Interested parties are encouraged to contact his office directly at 403-233-7592 or www.coredental.ca.
