New artistic director reinvents the dance festival programme, says LondonTown.com

LONDON, October 09, 2014 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Every year Dance Umbrella celebrates dance in all its form. From flamenco and hip-hop to ballet and contemporary, the festival commissions and co-produces a variety of new work for the stage and presents the best of British and international artists and inspires fledgling choreographers and dancers.

Founded in 1978, Dance Umbrella is London's international dance festival and has an audience of over one million people annually. The aim of the festival is to bring outstanding international dance to the capital and to engage the public with dance and choreography. Dance Umbrella takes place this October at venues including The Place, Greenwich Dance Agency, Sadler's Wells, the Barbican Theatre and Southbank Centre. The 2014 festival programme has been re-imagined and re-invented by new artistic director Emma Gladstone and there are some exciting productions waiting in the wings, including Stepping Stones which kicks off the festival with pieces by community-based youth groups and young choreographers. Alexandra Palace will be hosting experimental ice dancing, a first for London while another highlight is hip-hop show A Harlem Dream, which is set in the late 1920s and 30s when black poets, dancers, singers and musicians, converged in defiance against their ghetto status in Harlem . Plus, internationally celebrated French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj showcases his work Les Nuits (The Nights). Several workshops and professional development opportunities will also be available.

Dance Umbrella runs from 14-31 October 2014. Tickets for the various events, workshops and productions can be purchased online. Visit www.londontown.com for more information on booking a London hotel and more information about the festival.
