U.S. green jobs leadership takes center stage as Pertamina Geothermal Energy CEO leads Asian contingent to World Geothermal Energy Summit this December in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA, October 12, 2015 -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- Over 100,000 jobs are expected from 200 geothermal projects (total 7,800 MW) now in various stages of development in 15 U.S. states. This will be a key part of the public affairs discussion at the World Geothermal Energy Summit 2015 scheduled for December 10-11 in San Francisco, California. Headline speakers include heads of billion-dollar funds, CEOs of geothermal energy companies managing on average 1,200 MW of geothermal capacity per person, and regulators from the executive and legislative branches from geothermal growth countries such as the United States, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Philippines, Iceland, Costa Rica, Mexico, Turkey, Chile, Djibouti, and Bolivia. The first group of speakers was announced today including senior executives from the World Bank, Pertamina, Supreme Energy, Indonesia Power, and the Imperial Irrigation District.

“We are very honored to announce the first group of headline speakers for this year’s summit, led by Ms Mafalda Duarte, head of the $8.3 billion Climate Investment Funds (CIF) under the World Bank and Mr. Irfan Zainuddin, President Director at Pertamina Geothermal Energy which aims to produce 2,300 MW from geothermal power plants by 2025,” announced Mr. Rex Ian Sayson, Programme Director for the annual summit. “Our research shows an expected increase in the United States and Indonesia alone of 4,310 MW from now until 2020, which is 49% of the global expected additions from projects already in the construction and drilling phases.”

Latest data show that there were 3,150 permanent, on-site employees at geothermal power plants in the western United States, or 1.17 permanent jobs per megawatt installed. This is 19 times the reported onsite employment at wind projects and 5 times the reported onsite employment for solar projects.

Ms. Mafalda Duarte - Program Manager, Climate Investment Funds (CIF), World Bank

Mafalda heads the US$8.3 billion Climate Investment Funds (CIF), currently the largest source of international finance for renewable energy with commitments of over US$5.4 billion, or two-thirds of the CIF portfolio, dedicated to clean and renewable energy/energy efficiency. She has over 15 years of work experience and in-depth knowledge in development and climate change management; and has been responsible for the design and implementation of several funding mechanisms and new thematic programs. She holds degrees in international relations, economic policy management and climate change.

She will be speaking on how public funding, when well placed, can deliver investments at scale to empower transformation. CIF funding is supporting some of the first large-scale geothermal development projects in Armenia, Chile, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Mr. Irfan Zainuddin - President Director (CEO), PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy

Mr. Irfan Zainuddin is President Director at Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), the geothermal subsidiary of Indonesian state energy firm Pertamina, which aims to be the biggest producer of electricity from geothermal resources with total production of 682 MW by 2017. PGE's current capacity is 437 MW and it is aiming to produce up to 2,300 MW of electricity from geothermal power plants by 2025.

Mr. Irfan will be speaking about Lumut Balai, the largest geothermal project currently in construction phase in the world (220 MW). PGE’s geothermal projects under development include Ulu Belu (110 MW), Kamojang (35 MW), Lahendong (40 MW), Sungai Penuh (200 MW), Tambang Sawah-Hulu Lais (110 MW), Kotamobagu (80 MW), Iyang Argopuro (55 MW), and Cisolok-Cisukarame (40 MW).

On October 5, the Indonesian government announced plans to effectively provide PGE with a direct mandate to develop Indonesia’s 27,000 MW of geothermal potential.

“We have met Pertamina to discuss giving a direct assignment for geothermal working areas to state-owned enterprises. We will give it to Pertamina, but operations will be carried out by PGE as the company’s subsidiary,” confirmed Mr. Rida Mulyana, director general for renewable energy at Indonesia’s energy ministry, as quoted by the Jakarta Post on October 5, 2015.

Dr. Victor Van Der Mast - COO, Supreme Energy

Victor has been working in the conventional power, seawater desalination and geothermal power industries for over 35 years in various countries. As a Bechtel employee in San Francisco, California he participated in resolving various geothermal technology issues when the industry was still developing. Most recently he was Executive Managing Officer for a large Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) in the Middle East.

Dr. Van Der Mast will touch on the 2015 EPC tender for PLTP Muara Laboh (220 MW). Supreme Energy’s geothermal assets also include GN Rajabasa (220 MW) and Rantau Dadap (220 MW).

Mr. Sugeng Triyono - President Director (CEO), PT Tangkuban Parahu Geothermal Power (TPGP)

Sugeng Triyono is President Director at PT Tangkuban Parahu Geothermal Power (TPGP), the subsidiary of PT Indonesia Power which manages the Gn. Tangkuban Parahu Geothermal Concession Mining Working Area, a 44,000 km² geothermal concession associated with the large Tangkuban Parahu stratovolcano in Central West Java, Indonesia.

In early 2010, the United States Trade Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a grant to study the feasibility of geothermal power development within the Tangkuban Parahu geothermal concession area. The field was assessed by geologists to hold as much as 300 MW of geothermal power, and recommended to further explore and develop the resource with an initial expectation to develop a small binary or well head plant followed by a 110 MW (net) flash geothermal power plant. Reservoir temperatures of 250°C to 300°C are suggested by geothermometry calculations.

He will be updating on the production drilling strategy for Tangkuban Parahu (300 MW).

Mr. Kevin E. Kelley - General Manager, Imperial Irrigation District

Kevin Kelley is a native of Brawley, California and a lifelong resident of the Imperial Valley. A 1984 graduate of the University of Southern California, where he majored in communications arts and sciences, Kelley’s background in media consulting, marketing communications and public affairs is wide-ranging and extensive.

Recruited to the Imperial Irrigation District in June 2006 to lead IID’s public affairs and communications efforts, Kelley was named general manager in May 2011.
