ED Drugs Responsible for Blindness

Released on = August 7, 2005, 11:37 pm

Press Release Author = John Hilton/ Online Pharmacy

Industry = Healthcare

Press Release Summary = According to a recent report, prominent Erectile Dysfunction drug pills may lead to vision loss

Press Release Body = According to a recent report, prominent Erectile Dysfunction drug pills may lead to vision loss. “Government figures show that since the drug was launched seven years ago doctors have reported 102 deaths linked to it.” – stated by Daily Mail (UK) This report comes in continuation of previous claims that the erectile dysfunction
drugs Cialis Viagra and Levitra are responsible for cases of blindness and other severe side effects.

The FDA has disclosed that, since 1998, it has received some 43 reports of a type of irreversible blindness, in men taking impotence drugs (38 involving Viagra, 4 for Cialis, and 1 for Levitra). The FDA advised patients to discontinue taking these
medicines, and call a physician or healthcare provider instantly if they experience unexpected or decreased vision loss in one or both eyes.

In July 2005 the FDA approved new labeling to counsel men about potential blindness from Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra. The FDA action on the Viagra warning label also affects Cialis, sold by Eli Lilly & Co. and Icos Corp., as well as Levitra, which is co-promoted by GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer AG.

This particular type of vision loss, called nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked. It causes rapid and painless loss of vision in one or both eyes. Those who experience one incident are at a greater risk of experiencing a second episode affecting the other eye. Vision loss may be partial or complete.

The FDA stated that: “At this time, it is not possible to determine whether these oral medicines for erectile dysfunction were the cause of the loss of eyesight or
whether the problem is related to other factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or to a combination of these problems.” Though the manufacturers of these drugs argue that the drugs are safe and they are not the cause of the problems
mentioned here.
