The Delphian School Holds Annual Commencement Ceremony

Released on = August 16, 2005, 8:10 pm

Press Release Author = The Delphian School

Industry = Education

Press Release Summary = The Delphian School graduates twenty-one students as part of its annual Commencement ceremony. Award-winning composer David Campbell is the commencement speaker.

Press Release Body = On June 5th, The Delphian School held its 25th Commencement ceremony on the school’s 700-acre campus in Sheridan, Oregon. The ceremony, in which twenty-one graduates were awarded their diplomas, was the final event of Parents
Weekend, The Delphian School’s annual tribute to parents, which also features drama and music performances, an awards ceremony and a prom.

The Commencement ceremony was opened by David Campbell, an award-winning composer and parent of 2005 Delphian School graduate Alyssa Campbell. His arrangements have earned over 300 gold and platinum awards, 111 Grammy nominations and 26 Grammy
awards. In 2001, he and his wife, Raven Kane, collaborated on a song celebrating The Delphian School’s 25th Anniversary.

Mr. Campbell’s message to the graduates included an urge for them to stay inspired in whatever career path they choose. “People tend to say, ‘I don’t feel inspired today.’ Well, they’re waiting for someone else to put some spirit into the situation. But if nothing is inspiring you, you can just inspire yourself. You just inject some spirit or energy into what you’re doing. And that’s what this Delphi
weekend is all about, inspiration.”

Each graduate was then summoned to the podium, where they received their diplomas and delivered speeches to the more than 500 guests in attendance. The graduates shared their experiences at The Delphian School, as well as the individual gains and accomplishments they had.

Many graduates talked about the challenges of The Delphian School and how these challenges brought out abilities they hadn’t realized existed. “I had to confront aspects of life, such as leadership and responsibility, that before I had tried to avoid,” said Kit Blokzyl, who graduated with Honors. “While this was definitely not easy, I feel that I gained the most by confronting these areas.”

Other graduates talked about the value of The Delphian School’s literature program. “I discovered the value of developing my own ideas and viewpoints about issues in the world,” said graduate Chandler Hoisington. “Authors such as Charles Dickens, Jack London and Boris Pasternak showed me many circumstances where one must stand up for what he believes. Through current events classes and Headmistress Tea, I learned to share my ideas and views with others.”

In the end, what the graduates talked most about was how The Delphian School prepared them for life. “I became something that I never expected: a leader and an ethical, knowledgeable person who knows what integrity is,” said graduate Lauren Nuccio. “I have only reached Commencement, and ‘commence’ means to begin!”

The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students. The Delphian School is licensed to use Applied Scholastics(TM) educational services (http://www.AppliedScholastics.org).
