Kershaw County Medical Center Implements Mi-Co’s Mobile

Research Triangle Park, NC and Camden, SC. Mi-Co announced today that Kershaw County Medical Center (KCMC) is implementing Mi-Co’s flagship software system, Mi-Forms, to bring greater efficiency in the capture, verification, and use of medical data. The implementation will start with information gathered in KCMC’s Diabetes programs.

“We have specific goals in mind with the implementation of this technology,” stated Diane Arrants, Director of IT at KCMC, “and we expect an overall decrease in costs related to printing forms, copying forms, storing forms and completing forms. In addition, we feel that the quality of our data will continue to increase because we will eliminate potential errors that occur when data is manually transferred into an electronic database from pen/paper entries. We like the fact that the staff will have the effectiveness of an electronic process but the ease of use of a paper system.”

The Mi-Forms System will be implemented on Gateway M275 Tablet PCs running the Windows XP Tablet Edition Operating System. Mi-Forms on Tablet PCs allows for the design of form systems that use a paper-like interface for data capture. The Mi-Forms System converts the digital ink into machine-readable form; runs user specified business rules and sends the verified data to the back end medical
databases at KCMC. The majority of the data will be sent to Meditech's integrated Health Care Information System.

The project will gather data on the Tablet PCs regarding diabetes self-management programs. The data capture process includes forms for referrals, educational assessments, progress notes, nursing assessments, medication history, behavioral goals and follow-up.

The diabetes program is an important one for the hospital. In South Carolina diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the state and drives 14% of all hospital stays in South Carolina. Compared to state averages, Kershaw County residents are more likely to display primary risk factors that can lead to diabetes.

“We are truly excited about KCMC’s application of Mi-Forms not only because of the importance of the project but the application continues Mi-Co’s efforts to reduce the costs of medical data capture,” said Joel Farmer, Senior Implementation Specialist at Mi-Co. ”This application validates that Mi-Forms can have a positive
impact on hospitals of virtually any size since we have implemented Mi-Forms at small hospitals, such as the Cherokee Indian Health Facility in Cherokee, NC to hospitals with over 1500 beds.”
