This project is one of the very first to try to apply the open source development concept to the world of yacht design.
Minitransat yachts are the smallest ocean going racing yachts. With a hull length of only 23\' (6.5m), these boats are very stable and capable of crossing oceans. Within the box rule, the minitransat class essentially is an open development class.
\"We\'re going to need individuals with various interests and capabilities.\", said Hans Zwakenberg. He continued: \"Designing a yacht is a very challenging endeavor. What\'s nice about this project is that you can walk away from it with a set of plans and specifications that allow you to build a very economical sailing yacht yourself. At only 23\' length, there\'s not much material to purchase. You can\'t get into ocean going racing yacht ownership for less.\"
