Black Women Who Date Interracially is a web-based Yahoo! interest group that started in the Fall of 2004.
Who is this group? BWWDI are modern women who actively exercise their \"freedom of choice.\" The group was created to provide a meeting place for African-American women and women of the African Diaspora who enjoy relationships with men of different ethnic and racial groups. Our group is not a \"dating\" group-- we do not have male members. The web-group provides a platform for members to share their exploits, offer support and give positive reassurance that there are many who walk their same path. A majority of our members are single professional women who reside in New York City. Our diverse assembly consists of students, working professionals, married women and single mothers ages 18 through 45. Black women of every age are encouraged to join. Some past events have included brunches, afternoon teas, mixers - events that have allowed members to not only meet and become acquainted, but forge friendships through shared experiences and similar views.
What makes this progressive group so important to the current dating scene is the interest in dispelling \"the facts\" that stigmatize black women who date outside their race:
Black women who date outside of their race suffer from self-loathing. Black women who date outside of the race are doing it because there is a shortage of black men. Black women date outside of their race in response to black men\'s exogamy. Strong black women alienate her counterpart (black men).
BWWDI seeks to nullify these generalizations, end the perpetuation of the \"turning her back on the race\" mentality and encourage black women to stop apologizing for their choices.
To that end, the goals of BWWDI are clearly defined and challenging:
Create basic appreciation for the strength, attitude and power that black women are often vilified for; To be thought of as wives and girlfriends; Redefine the stature of black women by overcoming stereotypes produced and perpetuated in videos and movies that simply do not encompass the multi-dimensional black woman.
Black Women Who Date Interracially wants to encourage women who currently date or have considered dating outside of their race to hold their heads up and face the challenges that sometimes comes with their choice.
