Portland Youth for Human Rights Announces Summit for Brotherhood

Released on = February 23, 2006, 2:52 am

Press Release Author = Gwen Barnard/Church of Scientology

Industry = Non Profit

Press Release Summary = Focus on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Press Release Body = Portland, OR: The Portland branch of Youth for Human Rights is
celebrating the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by
holding a summit on March 18, 2006 to forward the idea of a universal spirit of
brotherhood.

The purpose is to teach youth around the globe about human rights, thus helping them
to become valuable advocates for the promotion of tolerance and peace.

Youth for Human Rights International was founded by educator and school principal
Mary Shuttleworth in August 2001 as a project of the International Foundation for
Human Rights and Tolerance, with the expressed goal to implement L. Ron Hubbard's
statement, "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream."

Clark Balcom, executive director of the Foundation for Human Rights, said, "The
Universal Declaration of Human Rights is, by all rights, the building block for a
better world. The Youth for Human Rights is providing a means by which everyone can
help create that world."

The brainchild of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights is a document that has been signed by nearly every member of the United
Nations but followed in whole by none. The first article of the declaration states,
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed
with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of
brotherhood."

Bev Mitchell, director of the newly formed Beaverton chapter of Youth for Human
Rights said, "A spirit of brotherhood towards all is something that everyone of us
should aspire to. This summit will take at least one more step in educating people
how this can be done, and, most importantly, why this should be done."

A key product from this Summit is to obtain additional signatures to the "Petition
to implement the Universal Declaration of Human Rights" which is being distributed
to the heads of the states that belong to the United Nations' General Assembly.

Also being introduced at the Summit will be the announcement of the Youth for Human
Rights Hero Contest, which will recognize the outstanding activities of young people
who are implementing positive change in educating others about the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.

The Summit for the Spirit of Brotherhood will be held on March 18 from 10 to 12:30
at the Church of Scientology of Portland at 709 SW Salmon Street in downtown
Portland. Sign in starts at 9:30 AM and the cost of admission is a can of food.

The Foundation for Human Rights and Tolerance is a not-for-profit organization
established in 1997 by members of the Church of Scientology impassioned about basic
human rights and tolerance.

If you cannot attend the summit, please sign the petition online at
www.youthforhumanrights.org.
