Press Release Summary = The Delphian School Chess Club took home a bag full of prizes at a competition in Corvallis, Oregon. Chris Kevorkian is fast becoming a power among ranked players in the state.
Press Release Body = On Saturday, December 3rd, nineteen members of The Delphian School Chess Club competed in the Corvallis Scholastic Chess Tournament, held in Corvallis, Oregon. This tournament has five sections of competition, representing five different age groups and skill levels. In this way members of all ages and abilities are placed properly against opponents of similar strength.
The Delphian School Chess Club held a dominant position in this competition. The competition had two sections for novices: in the section for young novices, Delphian student Chad Platt earned a second place trophy, and in the section for older novices, Mark Baritz was awarded a fourth place medallion.
There were also three official United States Chess Federation-rated sections. It is in these sections where the serious players compete. Play at this level is similar to that shown in the movie \"Searching for Bobby Fischer.\" Two years ago, almost none of The Delphian School students were official USCF members. Chess coach James Horton said, \"A few years ago, I would try to avoid these USCF events for fear of annihilation. But at this point, a majority of our players have joined up, and we are actually seeking out these official tournaments.\"
In the rated section for the K-4th graders, Delphian eight-year-old chess wizard Brett Horton made a clean sweep of his opponents, winning all five of his games and the first place trophy. In only his second rated tournament, Delphian's Arthur Eskandari had a good showing, finishing sixth out of twelve players.
Competing in a field of fifteen in the rated section for 5th through 12th graders, The Delphian School ran off with the lion's share of awards: Remi Keough captured a trophy for third, Kevin Kim won fourth, Scott Superville fifth, Jeff Kang seventh and Leandro Seto eighth.
The toughest competition, however, takes place in the Open Section. This section is for the strongest officially rated players. The Delphian School's Ben Jacobs and Brad Morris both had the courage to compete in this section, and they put in respectable showings; but it was Christopher Kevorkian who managed to shine brightest for Delphian this time. Chris was 3-and-1 going into the last round, battling it out with a higher rated player for second place. With less than a minute on the clock, Kevorkian was behind in pieces. With everyone standing around gawking, in a mad dash of piece moving and clock pounding, Kevorkian managed to not just catch up on pieces but to chase the other fellow down and give checkmate; punctuating it with a final slam on the clock, stopping it with less than ten seconds to go! In the toughest section of the tournament, Kevorkian brought home the second place trophy.
The Delphian School Chess Club has a growing reputation as a powerhouse at state chess competitions, and it looks like they will continue to be a power to be reckoned with for many years to come.
