Are All Poetry Contests Scams

Released on = April 24, 2006, 11:15 pm

Press Release Author = Poet\'s Train Publications

Industry = Entertainment

Press Release Summary = A new website about poetry contests explores the truth about
poetry contests and provides information on various contests that emerging poets can
enter.

Press Release Body = With so many poetry contests available both online and in
poetry journals, you don't have to look too hard to find one that suits your writing
style and your wallet.

However, with so many contests available, one has to wonder whether these contests
are out to promote poetry or simply earn a quick buck from starry eyed poets.

\"While some poetry contests are free to enter, they may not have a great prize in
return. On the other hand, some poetry contests that charge you ten or fifteen
dollars to enter do not really offer you a lot in return. Spending fifteen dollars
to win one hundred when you are competing with hundreds or even thousands of other
writers is not a good gamble\" says Art Hill, a poet who operates a web site about
poetry contests.

\"You also have to question the credibility of the site, whether they are actually
paying anyone or if they are awarding the provisioned funds to friends.\"

After examining many of the thousands of poetry contests available online, Hill came
to the conclusion that not all poetry contests are scams.

Many contests are in fact \'memorial\' contests to honor a deceased individual who had
a fondness for literature.
These contests are set up to honor a person and therefore, Hill concludes, these may
be the least likely to be strictly profit driven.

However, due diligence should still be done before spending any reasonable sum of
money on a poetry contest.

At his website, Hill provides some tips for winning poetry contests, as well as a
database of contests one may browse. However, Hill won\'t vouch for them, it is up
to the individual to check them out first.

There are links on the site to places that discuss various poetry scams.
