One In Five Companies Receive NO Benefits By Being A Member Of A Small Business Association

Released on = May 20, 2006, 9:15 am

Press Release Author = TSBMA.org

Industry = Small Business

Press Release Summary = A large proportion of small business are receiving little or
no direct benefit to sales and profits by being a member of a chamber of commerce,
networking group or other small business organisation.

Press Release Body = London, UK 20th May, 2006 --

A recent survey by Nottingham University showed that 20% of small businesses were
getting no benefit by being a member of an association in the UK.

The report conducted online in April 2006 questioned small businesses on the value
of being a member of an association.

Only 4% said that they received a significant benefit to their business be being a
member of an association. 31% of those questioned felt they received some minor
benefit as a member to their business.

\"I find this not at all surprising\" said John Sayer, President of The Small Business
Marketing Association. \"Most associations do very little to directly impact on a
members business. They tend to offer advice and support via the events and courses
they present, yet there is usually no direct increase in sales or profits as a
result of this.\"

\"It is clear that for UK businesses to be treated correctly by the associations and
other business organisations, they must offer more value and have a direct impact by
making certain that their members business achieves a growth in sales and profits.\"

The survey also found that programmes such as \'Dragons Den\' and \'The Apprentice\'
showed small business to be a tough and harsh environment, to which over 37% of
those surveyed agreed.
