Parenting Class Required For Divorcing Couples

Released on = August 1, 2006, 6:26 am

Press Release Author = David M. Siegel & Associates

Industry = Internet & Online

Press Release Summary = The Illinois Supreme Court now mandates that all parents and
guardians involved in a divorce, custody, visitation or paternity dispute, where
children under 18 are involved, must attend a parenting class.

Press Release Body = For Immediate Release
8-1-06

The Illinois Supreme Court now mandates all parents and guardians involved in a
divorce, custody, visitation or paternity dispute, where children under 18 are
involved, to attend a parenting class. The purpose of the class is to lessen the
negative emotional impact of the process on the children and maximize the children\'s
healthy psychological and social development. The class will last four (4) hours
and each party is required to take the class at different times. The completion of
the class is mandatory and the Court will not complete the lawsuit until all parties
have complied.

The class is offered by the University of St. Francis, Solution Resource Center.
The cost of the class is $85.00 per person and must be paid at the time of taking
the class. Classes are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
There is also a class taught in Spanish which is available on Thursday nights only.

Chicago divorce lawyer, David M. Siegel, states, \"Will County has just implemented
what was already required in Lake and DuPage Counties. It is unclear at this time
whether Cook County will follow suit.\" One item that is unclear is why the class is
needed in agreed upon, uncontested cases. If the parties have resolved all issues
and are wishing to have the court enter a Judgment, do they really need the burden
and expense of submitting to a four hour, $85.00 parenting class. Judge Barron,
from Will County, Illinois, 12th Judicial Circuit, stated that \"having the parties
take the parenting class may prevent future problems after the divorce is
finalized.\" Unfortunately, there are no studies which show that counties that
require parenting classes as a condition to receiving a judgment have a less
frequent occurrence of post-decree motions.

In addition to the parenting class, couples are now being sent to court ordered
mediation when there are disputes involving minor children.
