Press Release Summary = Library hosts Read-In

Press Release Body =
On Sunday, February 4, the Norman Public Library will join thousands of
organizations across the country and around the world in participating in the
eighteenth African American Read-In. The free, public event is part of the library's
schedule of Black History Month Activities.
The Norman Read-In, which will begin at 2 p.m. in the Lowry Room of the library, 225
N. Webster in downtown Norman, will feature community and university volunteers
reading aloud from their favorite books by Black authors. The library will also have
appropriate literature on display during the event from which participants may
choose for impromptu readings.
The African American Read-In is a project of the Black Caucus of the National
Council of Teachers of English, designed to make literacy a significant part of
Black History Month through the public appreciation of works by Black authors.
"This is our fourth year to host the Read-In and it has become a very meaningful and
enjoyable experience for everyone involved," says Norman librarian Basha Hartley.
"It is a wonderful way for us to come together to experience literature in a very
personal, powerful way."
The 2007 Read-In is coordinated by Bianca Gordon and is presented with support from
the library, the Pioneer Library System, Friends of the Norman Library, the Norman
Arts Council, and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
In addition to the readings, the come-and-go event will include food, discussion,
and information about the upcoming Big Read and Crowns Tea.
For more information about this event or any of the activities associated with the
library's Black History Month observation, visit or call the library at 701-2600.
