Museum chief urges public to look beyond Hollywood

Released on = February 28, 2007, 5:54 am

Press Release Author = The American Museum In Britain

Industry = Education

Press Release Summary = The Director of The American Museum in Britain has announced
this week its educational concern that people from Britain and Northern Europe need
to go 'beyond Hollywood' to gain a better understanding of the real America.

Press Release Body = Spanning Black America and the Civil War to George Washington
and Marilyn, the innovative new American Heritage permanent exhibition area opens
this Easter and aims to 'put the past into the present'. The ambitious initiative is
thanks to half a million pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund and charitable
donations. The forward thinking creative vision has aimed to illustrate the journey
of the development of America and its culture from colonial days (over 10 hi-tech,
interactive galleries) This new tactile and bright visitor zone adds a new dimension
to bring the stories of America to life. Museum Director Sandra Barghini states,
"Our mission is to give visitors the bigger picture beyond the limiting Hollywood
perspective and want and need to tell the real stories of what actually makes
America." The U.S. Ambassador, the Hon. Robert Tuttle will officially launch the
exhibition on April 24th.

Nerys Watts, HLF Manager in the South West adds; \'American culture has an enormous
influence on the UK and the Western world. Based in the Grade I listed Claverton
Manor, this project provides an excellent opportunity for people to learn about the
historic connections between America and Britain over the centuries, and to improve
the display the museum\'s important and fascinating collections. Since 1994 more than
1,560 projects and £323.5 million of our funding have benefited children and young
people in the South West.'

Further information on the exhibition can be found on the American Museum in
Britain's website at www.americanmuseum.org or by calling the museum at 01225
460503.

Sandra Barghini is available for Interview. Images available on request.
