Shetlopedia com - The Shetland Encyclopaedia

Released on = March 23, 2007, 4:44 pm

Press Release Author = Shetlopedia.com

Industry =

Press Release Summary = A new Shetland website, Shetlopedia.com has been launched.
Shetlopedia.com is the free online Shetland Encyclopaedia, written entirely by its
community of users (Shetlopedians). Shetlopedia aims to create an on-line reference
to all things Shetland.

Press Release Body = Gary Johnson, creator of Shetlopedia.com, wants to create a
non-commercial Shetland website that anyone and everyone can contribute to. He
explains, "Wikipedia is an excellent general information resource, but by its own
rules it is a general resource and contributors are urged not to put 'trivial'
information into Wikipedia as it would become less useful to the casual user.
Shetlopedia.com is different: by specializing on one topic - Shetland - I hope that
this can become a centralized resource where all contributors' knowledge of Shetland
is equally valid. Shetland has some great websites, but Shetlopedia.com will allow
anyone and everyone to add or edit their own pages"

Regarding the Shetlopedia.com 'everyone is an editor' policy, Gary says: "it doesn't
matter if you don't think you can write whole articles on Shetland - or think your
English isn't perfect - as even adding a few lines to an existing article can make a
big difference".

To start the ball rolling, Shetlopedia.com has launched a series of campaigns. These
include; creating a page for all Shetland businesses and websites; creating pages
with descriptions and photos for Shetland settlements, monuments and attractions;
and the Shetland Residents campaign, encouraging Shetland residents to add a page
about themselves. They're encouraging everyone to log on and get involved.

Wilbert Thompson (Wibby) a Voe based artist, has been taking a look at
Shetlopedia.com. He says "Shetlopedia.com is a great concept. Having one website
created by its users where you can access information on all and any aspect of
Shetland is a very useful and powerful tool. It's a website that children and
adults, residents and tourists, will be able submit their own view, knowledge and
experiences of Shetland".

Notes to Editors: Shetlopedia.com is a free, non-commercial website. Based on
Wikipedia.org but for Shetland related content only. Shetlopedia.com is a place to
gather information about Shetland, its heritage, its industry and its people.
