In February of 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that about one
in 150 American children have an autism-spectrum disorder, based on results from the
largest study ever performed on the disorder. Asperger Syndrome is an autism
spectrum disorder (ASD), one of a distinct group of neurological conditions
characterized by a greater or lesser degree of impairment in language and
communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and
behavior.

Individuals with Aspergers typically exhibit deficiencies with social skills,
reading non-verbal cues (body language), transitions (change in routines), often
have obsessive routines, and are highly sensitive to various stimuli, including
sounds, tastes, smells, and sights. Most individuals with Aspergers have normal or
high IQs, with some exhibiting exceptional skill or talent in a specific area.

Currently, one child is born with autism every 20 minutes in the United States.
