Improv Comedy Show Blends Improvisational Theater With Radio Broadcasts

Released on = April 25, 2007, 10:37 pm

Press Release Author = Magnet Theater

Industry = Entertainment

Press Release Summary = \"30,000 kHz of Sound\" to debut in May at the Magnet Theater

Press Release Body = New York City, NY, April 23, 2007 - While many improv shows
take inspiration from audience member suggestions, 30,000 kHz of Sound aspires to
create scenes on a global scale by drawing inspiration from around the world.
Shortwave radio operates between the frequencies of 3,000 kHz and 30 MHz (30,000
kHz) and are capable of reaching any location on the Earth because they can be
refracted by the ionosphere (a phenomenon known as skywave propagation).

\"We\'re attempting to make a unique theatrical experience,\" explains performer Eden
Gauteron. \"It\'s also a dark show,\" he continues, \"so audience members will be in the
theater with the lights out, surrounded and immersed by the sounds from the
shortwave radio and the sounds we\'re creating on the stage.\"

Director Shawn Wickens came up with the format while listening to the late night
paranormal-based radio program Coast to Coast AM and experimenting with
self-hypnosis relaxation techniques. \"I\'d be sitting in sitting in my room with the
lights low, listening to all this weird UFO subject matter on the radio and I\'d be
in kind of a trance. I thought why not re-create that experience for an audience,\"
explains Wickens. \"I\'d like people to walk away thinking they saw something
different,\" expounds Eileen Mullane, \"not just a comedy show but something surreal.
truthful. like they went on a trip without leaving their seat.\"

30,000 kHz is appearing with another comedy show called \"The Comic Book\" Fridays,
11:30pm on May 4 th, 11th, and 18th at the Magnet Theater (254 W 29th St, between
Seventh and Eighth Aves) . The show features performers Brigid Boyle, Dan Fairall,
Eden Gauteron, Damon Ketron, and Eileen Mullane. Call (212) 244-8824 to make
reservations.

The Magnet Theater offers classes in improv and sketch comedy from the best teachers
in NYC. In addition to its dedication to teaching the craft of comedy theater,
Magnet features shows six nights a week, including the Magnet\'s resident improv
ensemble show, Megawatt, every Thursday and Saturday night.
