Press Release Body =
The London Opera Gallery (134 New Bond St. London W1S 2TF), working in conjunction
with a Contemporary Indian Art Specialist, will be showcasing an overview of 20th
century Indian Art from May 23rd - June 13th 2007, representing an extensive variety
of themes, genres and styles. The 50 artists exhibited represent many of the
significant names in Indian Art from the pre- and post-independence period including
the infamous F.N.Souza, M.F. Husain and G.R. Santosh.
Having adopted the Western mediums and mastering the favoured genres of the period;
portraits and landscapes, instantly capturing the subject's essence, these early
pieces are now rare, not readily available nor accessible.
Amongst the spectrum of distinctively contrasting works, the genres, themes and
artistic responses to history, place, culture and socio-political conditions, are
striking.
This clearly suggests that artists across regions oscillated between the realms of
reality and fantasy, figuration and abstraction, decoration and austerity. "Made In
India" is a step towards showcasing Indian Art in locations outside India with the
hope of strengthening cross-cultural connections.
