Market Report 2006: Ophthalmic Goods & Services

This Market Report examines the UK ophthalmic goods and services market, which can
be divided as follows:
Ophthalmic goods - this sector mainly comprises spectacles and contact lenses, which
are largely supplied by retail opticians that provide both public-sector (through
the National Health Service [NHS]) and private-sector services.

Ophthalmic services - ophthalmic services supplied by retail opticians include the
provision of sight tests and, if appropriate, the dispensing of spectacles and/or
contact lenses. Excluded from this report is the market for contact lens care and
cleaning products. These products are now widely available in retail outlets, such
as supermarkets and chemists, following the deregulation of the market in 1993.
