Background check

Released on = August 23, 2007, 6:59 am

Press Release Author = Chandra Ponneganti / SITI Corporation

Industry = Computers

Press Release Summary = Nasscom creates a centralised database complete with
background verification to enhance security in IT-BPO industry; 43 IT companies have
already joined up

Press Release Body = New Delhi: When it comes to business outsourcing, the Indian IT
industry isn't taking too many chances with the security of data, with many
companies making it mandatory for its taskforce to get listed in the National Skills
Registry (NSR).

The NSR is a centralised database of employees of IT/BPO firms set up by the
National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), in association
with the National Securities Depository, to verify an employee's credentials, with
background checks.

As many as 43 IT companies - including Accenture, Dell, Genpact, HCL-BPO, HP,
i-flex, Infosys, Mphasis, Satyam, TCS, Wipro and Zensar - have already signed up.

'Like registering a share in demat...'
In fact, Pune-based Zensar and Mphasis have made NSR registration mandatory for
their employees, while others are recommending their workforce to join the league.

When contacted, Zensar CEO Ganesh Natrajan confirmed the move. Talking to Mumbai
Mirror, he explained that the NSR is an employee-friendly measure to minimise any
misuse of an employee's identity. "The NSR is like registering a share through a
Demat account. Currently, we are only asking our high-ranking officials to join the
league. But, eventually, the company will implement it across the workforce," he
said.

A spokesman at Bangalore-based Wipro Technologies also said the company is
recommending its staff to be members of the NSR. "It is still optional at our end,
though the response is very encouraging," he added.

Even Genpact and Accenture are advising their employees to join up.

Recruiters welcome the move
Like companies, IT head-hunters are also bullish on the NSR, calling it a benchmark
which will improve recruitmentTimes Ascent: Potential beyond boundaries
http://www.timesascent.in/ practices in the entire IT and BPO industry.

"We are actively considering making the NSR an essential ingredient of our
recruitmentTimes Ascent: Potential beyond boundaries
http://www.timesascent.in/ process. IT professionals registered with the NSR will
have an edge over those who are not," said Veena Gundavelli, CEO and president of
Siti Corporation, a talent acquisition firm.

But IT hiring company Kenexa India's managing director Raghuveer Sakuru felt that
awareness about NSR is still in the nascent stage and it will take at least five
years to work properly in the IT field because many professionals still do not want
to share their personal details.

"If the NSR is made compulsory for IT professionals, it will make a world of
difference, and at a faster rate," Sukuru stated.

Over 5 lakh expected to register by Dec
According to Nasscom, the initiative has reached a substantial mass with the
registration for the NSR touching the 1,25,000 mark as of July 2007.

"The target is to add over 3.75 lakh employees of IT services and BPO firms to the
present 1.25 lakh NSR list by end-2007," Nasscom president Kiran Karnik told Mumbai
Mirror.
