46 M Americans Hooked on Smoking

Released on: May 22, 2008, 12:21 pm

Press Release Author: DrugstoreTM

Industry: Healthcare

Press Release Summary: Many smokers try smoking and eventually get hooked to the
habit because of the belief that smoking promotes a sense of happiness. However, the
recent study conducted at Peninsula Medical School (PMS) shows that this belief is
false.

Press Release Body: More than 25 million men and about 21 million women in the
United States smoke, a habit that significantly increases the risk of heart attack
and stroke. Many studies suggest that these individuals smoke to achieve moments of
bliss or happiness.

However, an extensive study done by researchers of Peninsula Medical School (PMS)
showed that smoking does not make one happy. Led by Dr. Iain Lang, the researchers
studied the relationship of smoking and psychological well-being using a measure of
quality of life called the CASP-19. They discovered that smokers experienced lower
average levels of satisfaction and pleasure compared to their counterparts who do
not smoke. In addition to this, the difference was more obvious on lower
socio-economic groups.

The PMS study involved 9,176 people that are aged 50 or over who took part in the
English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). The studies for the research classified
subjects as never-smokers, former smokers, and current smokers, and used household
income as an indicator of socio-economic position.

\"We found no evidence to support the claim that smoking is associated with pleasure,
either in people from lower socio-economic groups or in the general population,\"
said Lang.

He adds, \"People may feel like they\'re getting pleasure when they smoke a cigarette
but, in fact, smokers are likely to be less happy overall -- the pleasure they feel
from having a smoke comes only because they\'re addicted. These results show smoking
doesn\'t make you happy -- in fact, it is associated with poorer overall quality of
life. Anyone thinking of giving up smoking should understand that quitting will be
better for them in terms of their well-being -- as well as their physical health --
in the long-run.\"

Heart attack and stroke are life-threatening conditions that often results in
serious changes to a person\'s well-being and quality of life. The PMS study
emphasized that smoking does not promote a sense of bliss and happiness, contrary to
popular belief. Making the public aware of this fact is essential in discouraging
individuals to try smoking.
