Sylvan Dell Publishing Supports World Turtle Day

Released on: May 23, 2008, 9:43 am

Press Release Author: Lauren Greene

Industry: Education

Press Release Summary: Sylvan Dell offers activities for parents and children to
celebrate turtles and tortoises on World Turtle Day.

Press Release Body: Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (May 23, 2008) - May 23rd marks the
celebration of World Turtle Day, a holiday dedicated to the appreciation and
protection of turtle and tortoise species. The Humane Society of the United States
calls for Turtle Day to "focus on the special conservation needs of turtles."

World Turtle Day was founded in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, a non-profit
turtle rescue organization. American Tortoise Rescue, based in Malibu, Calif.,
formed this holiday to help protect turtle and tortoise species from habitat
destruction, cruel pet trade and other serious threats. World Turtle Day takes place
in May, the month when turtles are emerging from their winter hibernation and start
the search for mates and nesting areas.

On World Turtle Day, the Humane Society gathers research to determine the well-being
of turtles and tortoises throughout the world to pursue conservation. In order to
pay tribute to these creatures on World Turtle Day, people often dress up as turtles
and venture to highways to help turtles and tortoises safely cross the road.

In honor of World Turtle Day, parents and children can celebrate these creatures by
reading together "Turtle Summer" by Mary Alice Monroe, "Turtles in My Sandbox" by
Jennifer Keats Curtis and "Carolina\'s Story" by Donna Rathmell. "Turtle Summer,"
"Turtles in My Sandbox" and "Carolina's Story" are all presented by Sylvan Dell
Publishing, a publisher of science, math and nature themed children's books. These
educational children's books are three of Sylvan Dell Publishing's 35 educational
children's books. The back of every Sylvan Dell book features a "FCM" section with
tips, fun facts and learning activities.

Online versions of the "For Creative Minds" sections are available for families,
classrooms and all World Turtle Day celebrators:

injured turtles being nursed back to health at
