Press Release Body = Calpine Deploys Decision-Support and Employee Self-Service Portals on BEA WebLogic Portal 8.1 Two Portals Designed to Improve Staff Productivity and Organizational Adaptability by Accelerating Flow of Information from Days to Minutes

SAN JOSE, Calif.—October 21, 2004— BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software, today announced that Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN), a North American power company, has implemented two business-critical portals on BEA WebLogic Portal 8.1™.

Calpine employs 3,500 people at plants it owns or leases in 21 states in the U.S., Canada, The Netherlands and Great Britain. The company has grown rapidly in recent years, with power generation capacity increasing 54 percent annually since 1999. Calpine determined that processes implemented when it was a smaller company needed to evolve to support the day-to-day requirements of a bigger one. To address this challenge, Calpine implemented two portals, OISWeb (Operations Information System on the Web) and EIP (Enterprise Information Portal) on BEA WebLogic Portal 8.1. Calpine’s innovative use of portal technology earned the firm recognition as a finalist in the Environment, Energy & Agriculture category for the 2004 Computerworld Honors 21st Century Achievement Awards.

OISWeb is designed to present data from plant telemetry sources, weather services, and market pricing services, as well as a variety of business data from internal and external sources. Leveraging BEA technology, OISWeb is designed to process and format the data and make personalized, real-time feeds and historical reports available to Calpine executives, energy traders and risk managers in a dashboard format.

“Many decisions must be made in real time to fully exploit business opportunities,” said Barbara Kindel, V.P. of I.S. Solutions Engineering. “OISWeb, powered by BEA, can provide visibility for operations and engineering personnel. This is truly a groundbreaking solution for Calpine, and one that is helping to make us more competitive. By combining so much data from so many sources, we can help eliminate barriers to optimizing operational and financial performance.”

EIP is designed to facilitate employee self-service. It can present location and job-specific information to employees, and it provides access to Calpine’s Exchange email system, company policies, personnel forms, and a company directory. The portal can also make mission-critical personnel reports available to plant managers.

Scott Anderson, client services director, Enterprise Systems, added, “EIP is a great example of the creativity and innovation used at Calpine to solve business challenges. A seemingly simple act, such as personnel reporting, has been streamlined to the point that we can save money and accelerate delivery, which helps make the information more valuable.”

Calpine chose BEA WebLogic Portal because it is designed to help enable faster time to value and high availability. Another important factor was adaptability. Calpine was able to implement the new portals on existing hardware, potentially saving the cost of new infrastructure investment. In addition, Calpine was able to incorporate existing applications, which were built with the company’s incumbent development technology standard (.NET), into the BEA-powered portals. Such openness and flexibility helps protect Calpine’s investment while giving the company the freedom to adopt heterogeneous solutions that can best satisfy the needs of the business.
