Upgrading to IBM i 61 New White Paper from CCSS Helps Power Systems Users Make a Smooth Transition

Press Release Body: CCSS today announces the release of a new white paper designed to assist IBM Power Systems (formerly, IBM System i) users in making a seamless upgrade to the much anticipated new OS from IBM: IBM i for Business 6.1. The new OS will be the first of its kind to run on Blade Servers and marks a strategic attempt by IBM to embrace the competitive SMB market by offering them a range of engaging benefits such as increased efficiency, security and stability.
IBM Power Systems users can look forward to an increased number of partitions as there is no longer a requirement for each partition to have its own dedicated disk adaptor. Similarly, they can also expect to benefit from superior hardware and intrusion detection, as well as the provision to make better use of Power 6 processors. This means that users upgrading from Power 5 processors and/or i 5.4 (i5/OS V5R4) to i 6.1 should anticipate measurably improved performance, stability and security of converted objects and programs. Encryption support has been enhanced for greater ease of use and users will be glad to hear that saving and restoring spooled files will now be a routine task that is entirely possible without the use of 3rd party tools or complex techniques.
Kurt Thomas, CCSS System Engineer, explains why the new white paper will ease upgrade issues: "Typically, a significant upgrade such as this can be a daunting task for even very experienced IT Managers, especially on production boxes, not least because there are so many factors to take into consideration. We knew it would simplify the task greatly for our customers if they could follow a guide that included not just the considerations of our own solutions, but also the vital IBM documentation and our own first hand experiences following an in-house upgrade to i 6.1. The white paper guide allows users to perform both the OS and CCSS upgrades."
The white paper takes into account three possible scenarios and outlines a tested procedure for each of them. In the first scenario, users may start with an existing pre-6.1 release of the OS and an existing installation of the CCSS QSystems Management products. The second scenario is for users who already have CCSS products installed on a number of pre-6.1 systems to which they want to add a new system or partition running IBM i 6.1. Finally, in the third scenario, users can be performing a first-time installation on a system which is already running on i 6.1.
Compatibility with IBM i 6.1 is the latest announcement from CCSS in a year that has seen the systems management specialist gain new customers from the logistics, financial services and insurance industries. In the same time frame, the company has also released a series of important product enhancements based on the challenges experienced in real-world computing environments including real-time DASD growth monitoring, outbound FTP request monitoring, and predictive disk projection functionality from the latest versions of QSystem Monitor (V12) and QMessage Monitor (V6).
