Brunel University And Biopac Shaping The Future Of Packaging

Released on: September 30, 2008, 6:08 am

Press Release Author: Hannah Lane/apt marketing & pr ltd

Industry: Environment

Press Release Summary: Brunel University and biodegradable packaging supplier Biopac
are conducting innovative DEFRA-backed research into alternative crop uses. The
findings could shape the future of natural, renewable and cost-effective industrial
packaging.

Press Release Body: The research comes at a time when reliance on fossil-based
materials is causing huge concern. Industry leaders across the whole supply chain
are seeking alternative renewable materials to replace non-renewable plastics in
their products. In particular, utilising bio-based materials from non food crops
could vastly reduce manufacturing and society’s reliance on fossil-based materials.

Biopac and Brunel University have been working in partnership for the last four
years on successive research projects to examine alternative uses for these
bio-based crop sources. Following initial examination of ‘processing cereal straws
for fibre packaging’, a second research project was launched; to develop a range of
bio-composites based on whole utilisation of renewable wheat straw for industrial
applications.

Wheat straw is an annually renewable, low cost and abundant source of natural fibre
in the UK, making this bio-based material a strong contender to replace conventional
packaging. Both Brunel University and Biopac are extremely encouraged by research so
far and believe that this exciting research could provide precisely what
manufacturers have been searching for.

Brunel University is further endorsing Biopac, and improving its own green
credentials by introducing the company’s existing range of disposable catering
packaging. These products are fully compostable, biodegradable and made from natural
and renewable resources.

Further information and interviews are available on request.
