Montreal , Quebec - Drug Rehab Services receives numerous phone calls from people living and working in Fort McMurray , Alberta . This is primarily due the rising drug and crime problems facing this once small community. "We get phone calls from people who have accepted jobs working in the oil sands, and end up getting introduced to crack cocaine, and within no time there 100$ thousand dollar a year job is lost." Comments Marcel Gemme, owner of Drug Rehab Services. "These individuals are stuck with the real fact they are losing everything and need to get drug rehab help fast." In 2007 Alberta was a booming province and put in motion plans to invest 45 billion dollars into the oil sands over the next ten years.

This boom, more specifically in Fort McMurray , has brought many different crime and drug problems to the community. Over the past six years the towns population has increased by at least 9% every year. The town faces many problems of gambling, sex, and drugs, including marijuana, crack cocaine, and crystal meth, which are all widely used throughout the town. The towns drug problems is more the four times the provincial average. Close to 40% of the workers in Fort McMurray test positive for cocaine and marijuana, and in 2006 the accident rate in Alberta was up by 17%, and experts believe this is due to drug abuse on the job site.

Fort McMurray also faces rising homeless rates, and in fact has been allocated one million dollars more that has been given out to different groups to help handle the homelessness problem in Fort McMurray . This extra funding is all part of a province wide plan to eradicate homelessness over a ten year period in Alberta .
