Some of the world's best sailors will be in action in Langkawi over the new year period.

The Malaysian resort will host the IODA World Sailing Championship, with proceedings set to get underway on December 28th 2010 and run until January 8th 2011.

Organised by the Malaysian Yachting Association, the Sport Council of Malaysia, the Ministry of Sport and Youth, the Kedah state government and the Langkawi Authority, the event gives tourists a chance to watch competitors from around the world go head-to-head.

Anyone staying in Langkawi hotels over this period who is keen to watch the action unfold can head down to the Kuah Harbour area, or soak up the atmosphere at the on-share venue - the National Sailing Centre.

Entrants will no doubt be willing to replicate the achievements of Sinclair Jones, Mohamad Faizal Norizan and Ignacio Rogala, who finished first, second and third respectively at the 2009 event.

Regular visitors to the resort may be aware that Langkawi is something of a hotbed of sailing action, with a number of similar competitions taking place each year.

The island also hosted the finale of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, which took place for the 21st time at the end of November.
