A major new exhibition will open at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane midway through next month.

Entitled 21st Century: Art in the First Decade, the installation will run from December 18th 2010 to April 26th 2011 and will take up the whole of the GoMA.

Cheap hotels Brisbane customers who visit the attraction will be able to see more than 200 works created by over 140 artists from in excess of 40 countries, with each of these pieces made between 2000 and 2010.

As well as featuring items from the gallery's extensive collection of contemporary productions, it will include loans from Australian and international collectors, plus those that have been specially commissioned for the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Children's Art Centre will house an array of interactive displays on the same theme aimed specifically at youngsters and families.

Describing the purpose of the exhibition, the organisers explained: "21st Century will showcase current directions in artistic practice, as well as examine the role of the art museum in these changing times."

Art enthusiasts staying at hotels in Brisbane while the display is in town can visit the gallery between 10:00 and 17:00 local time on weekdays, and from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekends.

Admission is free, excluding special exhibitions and some Australian Cinematheque screenings.
