One of Australia's most iconic summer sporting spectacles, the 2010 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, will set sail next month.

Entrants will compete over the 628 nautical miles separating the two cities, with the event due to get underway on Boxing Day in what will be the 66th time it has been held.

The organisers have compared the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race to other famous sports experiences such as the Melbourne Cup and the Ashes, adding: "No regular annual yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage than does the start on Sydney Harbour."

However, the competition is not all about fame and publicity - it is widely regarded as one of the toughest possible tests of seamanship, owing to the often challenging weather conditions in the Tasman Sea.

Cheap hotels Sydney customers who attend the start will see the harbour packed with yachts, after the organisers confirmed 102 vessels had been nominated to take part.

Of these, between 90 and 95 are anticipated to be on the start line for the launch at 13:00 local time.
