AsiaRooms.com - Get Set for the Start of the Tour de Langkawi 2011

Released on: December 22, 2010, 3:05 pm

Industry: Travel

The annual Tour de Langkawi will get underway next month and will kick off from the Malaysian resort that lends its name to the event.

None of the racing action has actually taken place in Langkawi for the past four years, instead being held in other parts of Malaysia. But in 2011 the cyclists will set off from Dataran Lang in the south of the island and battle it out over more than 90km, before reaching their destination in Kuah.

People staying in Langkawi hotels at the time should make sure they line the course for the spectacle, as this will be the last glimpse they get of the entrants at the resort.

Following the opening leg, participants will head to the Malaysian mainland with the goal of reaching Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, in the fastest time possible.

This requires an overall trip of more than 1,300km over ten different stages, incorporating the iconic hill climb to the Genting Highlands.

The Tour will take place between January 23rd and February 1st, with a number of Malaysian and international teams already confirmed as being involved.

Among them are US outfit UnitedHealthcare, who can count German sprinter Robert Forster among their numbers, as well as Italy's famous Androni squad managed by the legendary Gianni Savio.
