Hordes of spectators and entrants will be heading to Malaysia in the new year for the Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2011.

The occasion, which is arguably the biggest event in Langkawi's annual calendar, will take place between January 11th and 15th, with the organisers having expressed their desire for it to live up to this year's edition.

According to the team behind the regatta, the 2010 instalment was comparable to a "scenic painting", with the participants doing battle against the elements in their race for the finish line.

"There was much to say about it ... with regards to the passion, daringness, courage, strength and - most importantly - team spirit displayed by each individual," they remarked.

Although the event launches on Tuesday January 11th with registration, a practice race and a briefing for all skippers involved, it gets underway in earnest the day after with all classes of yacht taking to the water from 09:30 local time.

Prize presentations and dinners will take place in the vicinity of many Langkawi hotels every night at 19:30 to reward the most successful participants throughout each stage of the competition.

The Langkawi challenge is the opening race on the 2011 Asian regatta calendar, with locations for future meetings including Singapore, Phuket and Hong Kong.
