Watersports fanatics should be well catered for in Dubai in the new year when the UAE Jet Ski Championship comes to town.

The Dubai International Marine Club will play host to the event, which is set to take place on New Year's Day and could attract quite a crowd down to the coast to watch the hi-octane action unfold.

This year's edition saw the Dubai Promenade used as both a safe area for the jet skis to be launched and as the viewing site for the assembled crowds.

People who attended the 2010 instalment watched on as entrants from a number of locations - including the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East - did battle over an array of events.

Each class - namely Pro Ski up to 900CC, Runabout Stock up to 1600CC, Junior Stock up to 800CC, Ski Limited up to 800CC and Runabout Super Stock up to 1600CC - had two races made up of between eight and 15 laps of the course.

A two-minute freestyle section was also put on, with tourists staying in Dubai hotels who watched the challenge getting to see the riders pull off a range of gravity-defying jumps and demanding turns.

"There was an exciting mixture of adrenaline, skill and power," the organisers remarked.
