Travellers heading to Malaysia next month will have the opportunity to experience one of the country's biggest religious celebrations - Thaipusam.

The Hindu festival will take place on January 20th 2011 and is centred on the historic Batu Caves, located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

It was brought to the south-east Asian country by Indian immigrants in the 1800s and has been held at its current site since the late 19th century, since when it has grown to become the nation's most significant Hindu public display.

People staying in Kuala Lumpur hotels at the time can expect to witness hordes of revellers descending on the caves for the occasion, with more than a million attendees typically taking part.

Thousands of Malaysians line the streets to get involved in a procession in which an statue of one of their gods, Lord Murugan, is transported by chariot to the site from Kuala Lumpur itself - a journey of around 13km.

Groups of drummers and musicians typically tag along with the crowds, helping to bring a loud carnival atmosphere to the proceedings.

Throughout the chariot's slow and meandering journey, devotees approach it with bowls of fruit and also hold up babies in the hope they will be blessed.
