LateRooms.com - Cheer on The Runners at the Cross Internacional de Italica in Seville

Athletics fans staying at the accommodation Seville offers in the new year may wish to attend the Cross Internacional de Italica.

The contest will see runners line up to compete in an Ancient Roman area of Santiponce north of Seville called Italica, which the organisers claimed is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula.

It was founded in 206 BC by the Romans, but on January 16th 2011 it will be taken over by some of the finest cross country athletes in the world and their eager audience, who will also be able to take in the fascinating historical features of the area.

The Seville race is one of several major dates in the sport's calendar, along with meetings in Japan, Scotland, Kenya and Portugal.

Prizes of up to €150 (£125) are available to people taking part in the challenge, but keen runners should be aware that they need to complete a qualifying race under a certain time to be able to line up on the starting blocks.

This is the 29th edition of this prestigious event, with the day involving more than ten different races for separate age groups.

People should be sure to get to the starting line early to cheer on the runners, as the first contest kicks off at 09:30 local time and the final one takes place at 14:00.

This week, Kenyan cross country runner Joseph Ebuya cruised to victory in an event in Madrid.

For more information on this event, visit the Cross Internacional de Italica website or contact the venue on +34 954 550 000.

LateRooms.com recommends a wide range of accommodation in Seville, such as the Hotel Don Paco Seville.
