Holidaymakers looking to blow away the cobwebs after a night of excess may like to join Berlin's New Year Run on January 1st 2011.

While some revellers may shudder at the thought of a four-kilometre jog around the city at 12:00 local time on New Year's Day, the event has became a popular annual fixture in the German capital.

Furthermore, the run is entirely free to enter and any donations are used to raise money for charitable organisations such as Unicef.

It is also open to people of all ages and abilities, which means you do not have to be a seasoned athlete or have prior experience of distance running to join the fun.

The route begins at Pariser Platz near the Brandenburg Gate and makes its way past many of the city's most famous landmarks.

For those brave enough to leave their Berlin hotels after indulging in a night of raucous partying on December 31st, the event provides a novel way to cure a hangover and welcome in the new year.

It could also be the perfect starting point for tourists who have made a new year's resolution to get more physical exercise.

No advance booking is required for the New Year Run, so those wishing to take part should simply ensure they reach the Brandenburg Gate before midday.

Approximately 3,500 people participate in the event each year.

The Brandenburg Gate also provides the focal point for the city's famous New Year's Eve celebrations, with thousands of revellers gathering to enjoy live music, spectacular fireworks and the midnight countdown.

LateRooms.com features a range of accommodation in Berlin, including the Maritim Hotel Berlin.
