Berlin visitors can kick-start their year with an unorthodox display of athletic prowess by signing up for the annual Tower Run.

Taking place on January 9th 2011, this event sees competitors race up the stairs of the IDEAL-Hochhaus - the German capital's tallest residential building.

The structure boasts 29 flights of stairs and 465 individual steps, so the Tower Run is unlikely to attract people looking for rest and relaxation during their stay in Berlin hotels.

However, those who feel up to the challenge and would like to participate in one of the city's more unusual events can register on the website of race organiser TUS Neukolln.

It costs between €4 and €9 (£3.30 and £7.60) to take part in the race, with entries accepted until January 4th.

Furthermore, people who choose not to compete are welcome to stand and enjoy the spectacle for free.

Runners will be sent off at different times on the day, depending on their age and gender.

According to the TUS Neukolln website, the female participants are due to get things started at 11:00 local time.

People traditionally complete a few laps of the building's car park to warm up before steeling themselves to tackle the 29-storey tower, which can be found in the Gropiusstadt neighbourhood.

The event comes shortly after Berlin's annual New Year Run, in which thousands of people attempt to blow away the cobwebs by completing a four-kilometre route through the centre of the city on January 1st.
