The Dutch violinist and conductor is due to perform at the city's ISS Dome on Saturday January 8th 2011, when he will demonstrate his formidable talent and famously energetic performance style. Credited with helping to spur the revival of waltz music, Rieu is perhaps most famous as the founder of the Johann Strauss Orchestra. The ensemble, which began performing in 1987, is known for presenting classical works with a sense of fun and frivolity not often associated with large concert halls. Rieu has explained that he aims to make classical music as accessible as possible by removing certain formal aspects of the experience that could "intimidate" causal listeners. "My orchestra consists of young, enthusiastic musicians, who put their heart and soul into the music every evening when they play in our concerts," he explains on his official website.
A number of German dates have been confirmed, including performances in Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt and Hannover.
