People spending time in Tenby may like to visit St David's
next month for a recital of La Nativite du Seigneur.
Olivier Messiaen's famous solo work will be performed by Simon Pearce, assistant
organist at St David's Cathedral, on Sunday January 23rd 2011.
Taking place at 17:00 GMT, the recital could provide holidaymakers staying in one of
the many hotels Tenby has to offer with a reason to explore another of Pembrokeshire's famous
locations.
St David's is said to be the smallest city in the UK and its cathedral was a
popular site of pilgrimage during the Middle Ages.
The organ recital is free to attend, although a collection will be taken at the end
of Mr Pearce's performance.
Written by French composer Messiaen in 1935, La Nativite du Seigneur was intended as
a testament to his strong Christian faith and is divided into nine movements.
Each of these "meditations" depicts a concept or image from the familiar story of
the birth of Jesus, such as the angels, the shepherds and the Virgin Mary with her
child.
The piece was once described as "monumental and impressive" by the late conductor
and composer Richard Franko Goldman, who suggested it could be "one of the great
organ works of all time".
