Holidaymakers who are keen to experience the ancient customs
of Cornwall may like to attend the St Ives Feast next month.
Due to occur on February 7th this year, the seaside town's Feast Day traditionally
takes place on the first Monday after February 3rd.
The celebration recognises the day when the parish church of St Eia was consecrated
in 1434, an event that effectively marked the founding of St Ives.
Of the numerous special activities associated with the Feast, the one that is most
likely to attract visitors staying in the luxury hotels Cornwall has to offer is arguably the hurling of the silver ball.
This traditional sporting encounter dates back at least 1,000 years and is one of
only two surviving examples of Cornish hurling.
In the annual game, two teams compete to win possession of a cricket-sized wooden
ball coated in silver.
Described as "a robust and exciting event" by the St Ives Hotel and Guest House
Association, the game begins when the ball is thrown from the parish church to the
beach below at 10:30 GMT.
It lasts until midday, when the player in possessions of the ball must return it to
the mayor at the Guildhall and receive the customary reward of five shillings.
