One of the biggest events in Sydney's annual calendar, the Mardi Gras Parade, will return to the New South Wales capital in the coming weeks.

Taking place on the evening of March 5th 2011, the carnival is one of the highlights of the city's Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, which kicks off on February 19th.

Sydney hotels are traditionally in hot demand throughout the occasion but are likely to be particularly busy around the parade, with hundreds of thousands of spectators typically lining the streets to get involved.

To get into the spirit, the crowds often get into costume, although their outfits will do well to stand out amid the often flamboyant, hilarious and creative performers who are appearing in the spectacle.

Cheap hotels Sydney customers can expect to see lavish costume designs and wild dancing as more than 100 floats make their way slowly down Oxford Street.

People keen to watch the action can choose to line the road and mingle with the masses for free, or book tickets for the reserved seating in the Glamorama on the corner of Moore Park Road and Anzac Parade. Passes for the area are available from AU$143.95 plus booking fee.

Tourists who have taken advantage of hotel deals for the occasion should head down to Oxford Street for the scheduled start at 19:45 local time.

For more information on the parade, visit the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras website or contact the organisers on (+61) 2 9383 0900.
