Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance will be the setting for
More than Bombs and Bandages (MBB), an event that looks at the role
Australian military nurses played in World War I.
Created by historian Kirsty Harris, the work is sure to be an interesting and moving
tribute to their efforts in the conflict and is a must-see for tourists staying in Melbourne hotels when it takes place on February 25th 2011.
In creating MBB, Ms Harris has compiled a variety of sources - including diaries,
hospital and service records, autobiographies and interviews - to reveal the
oft-changing role that had to be performed by the Australian Army Nursing Service
during the war.
According to the organisers, the work that had to be carried out by these healthcare
staff was far more unpredictable and diverse than many would expect.
People keen to check out the piece have been informed that advance bookings are
essential, while it may also be advisable to book the cheap accommodation Melbourne has available as soon as possible. Proceedings are due
to get underway at 12:30 local time on the day.
The Shrine is already popular with last minute accommodation guests and other tourists and is arguably one of the
city's best-known landmarks. More than 120 ceremonies are held at the site every
year.
For more information on this event, visit the Shrine of Remembrance website or
contact the organisers on (+61) 3 9661 8100.
