There's nothing quite like the thrill of a race and those participating in the Gold Coast Triathlon are sure to agree.

A 750-metre swim, followed by a 20km cycle and five km run are scheduled for Sunday May 1st 2011.

The triathlon is also known as the Luke Harrop Memorial after a sportsman who died during a training ride on the Gold Coast in 2002. Organisers of the race named in his honour say he was extremely popular, as well as being keen and dedicated to the sport.

Athletes taking part on May 1st must check in at 05:15 local time, but the race begins at 07:30 when spectators might want to gather at the Broadwater Parklands opposite the Australia Fair Shopping Centre to catch the action.

A shorter route, entitled the Enticer Tri, takes place on the same day with a 300-metre swim, ten km cycle and a 2.5 km run. It may encourage visitors to the Gold Coast to test their sporting prowess by securing a spot on the course.

Children need not feel left out of the action either, as the Courier-Mail Kool Kids Tri takes in a 100m swim, two km cycle and 400m run designed for budding enthusiasts.

Sports fans keen to get in on the action can book a huge range of Gold Coast accommodation and cheap hotels at LateRooms.com.au.
