LateRooms.com - See the Power of Heroines in Madrid

Madrid is hosting an exhibition called Heroines that explores the role of women in western art.

The show will open at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Fundacion Caja Madrid on March 8th and run until June 5th 2011.

It aims to examine the range of roles played by women, such as hunters, politicians, athletes and other liberated activities.

The key to these pursuits is that the female becomes active, rather than submissive, according to the organisers.

"In western art, women have all too often been reduced to two prevailing, complementary models; that of mother or that of the object of sexual desire," explained the museum.

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00 local time. The closest Metro stop is Banco de Espana.

Tickets for Heroines are priced at €8 (£6.80).

Meanwhile, Fundacion Caja de Madrid is offering a free 50-minute guided tour of the pieces on display at the gallery, although booking in advance is necessary.

If art enthusiasts want to find accommodation for their trip to the Spanish city, LateRooms.com features a wide selection of Madrid hotels for them to browse, including the Westin Palace Madrid.
