Along with Metallica and Anthrax, they form the 'big four' of thrash - the American groups credited with developing and popularising the style among heavy metal fans during the 1980s. Megadeth formed in 1983 after Dave Mustaine left Metallica in acrimonious circumstances. The guitarist created a new group with the intention of challenging his former band and their first LP Killing Is My Business ... and Business Is Good! came out in 1985. Slayer also emerged during the early 1980s and achieved a major breakthrough with Reign in Blood, their 1986 major label debut. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album was viewed as a new benchmark for heavy metal at the time and is still considered one of the genre's most influential releases.
