One of the world's most prestigious horse races, the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Cup, will be held in Hong Kong at the start of next month.

The event was first held back in 1975 to commemorate the monarch's visit to Hong Kong with her husband, Prince Philip.

Nazakat, an outsider ridden by AK Cheam, won the inaugural QEII Cup and his owners were rewarded for their efforts by receiving the trophy from Her Majesty.

As a group one race, it attracts some of the best horses and jockeys in the world, with all of them attempting to win a share of the HK$14 million (£1.1 million) prize pot.

Among this year's runners will be Victoire Pisa, the winner of the 2011 Dubai World Cup - the richest horse race in the world. Pisa arrived in Hong Kong at the start of April, giving him a month to acclimatise in time for the event.

The QEII Cup will take place at Hong Kong's Sha Tin Racecourse on May 1st.

Entry to the public enclosure costs just HK$10.
