The Mutua Madrid Open has been going as a men's tournament since 1990, but received a major overhaul in 2009 after switching from indoor surfaces to clay courts at the Caja Magica. It was expanded to include female players for the first time, with Russia's Dinara Safina picking up the first WTA title at the event and Aravane Rezai of France triumphing last year. World number one Rafael Nadal is the reigning men's champion in Madrid, having defeated Roger Federer in the 2010 final. More than 184,000 people turned up to watch the action at last year's tournament and a similar number are expected this time around.
